(ST.MARYS, ON) On Wednesday August 15, 2012, an elderly female St.Marys resident received a call from a male purporting to be from a Bell Referral Program, who was soliciting a new Bell Canada promotion. The female provided her credit card information to the male but upon speaking to one of her children realized that the call was probably a scam. She immediately cancelled her credit card and it was confirmed that no purchases had yet been made on the card. The female contacted police and reported the incident.
Police investigation revealed that the call back number was not in service, and that the caller if he was a Bell Canada employee would have provided an identification number. Numerous other searches were conducted by police and investigation into this incident is continuing.
The public is advised to obtain Bell Canada employee names, ID#’s, promotion codes and call back numbers when they receive solicitations they might be interested in. Prior to providing personal information and credit card numbers Bell Canada should be contacted through the main Bell number so as to verify the legitimacy of the Bell employee and the promotion offered.
