(HURON COUNTY, ON) – The Countering Distracted Driving and Promoting Green Transportation Act became law on October 26, 2009. Distracted driving legislation prohibits the use of electronic devices while the vehicle is in motion with prescribed exceptions. A GPS navigation device, communication device with hands free system only, and vehicle information systems are allowed.
The OPP has identified distracted driving in its Provincial Traffic Safety Program (PTSP) as one of the four major causes of death and injury on Ontario roads. The “big four†factors are: aggressive driving, lack of occupant restraint, impaired driving and distracted driving.
From February 13 to February 19, 2012, the Huron County OPP Detachment will be utilizing all available personnel to participate in the OPP Distracted Driving Campaign. A distracted driver can be fined $155 at the roadside, but the cost can be far greater if the distracted driver causes a serious personal injury or fatal crash.
Distracted driving kills! As a driver, it is your responsibility to direct your entire attention to driving safely.
