Phone In One Hand, Ticket In The Other

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Drivers chatting on the phone and texting while driving are a common site on our roads in Huron County. Are you breaking the law and taking a deadly risk? Distracted driving kills! As a driver, it is your responsibility and duty to direct your entire attention to driving safely. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has identified distracted driving as one of the four major causes of death and injury on Ontario roads. The “big four” are: distracted driving, impaired driving, aggressive driving and lack of occupant restraint.

Distracted driving takes you away from the primary task of driving. Driving requires your full attention at all times. If you need to make a call or send a message wait until you can do so safely and when your attention is not drawn away from the safe operation of your vehicle. If you choose to break the law not only are you putting yourself, passengers and every other user of the roadway at risk.

Since January 1st, 2012, Huron OPP officers have charged 39 drivers with distracted driving. The fine for using a hand-held phone or communication device while driving is $155. A conviction on your driving record may also lead to higher insurance premiums.

“Huron OPP officers have been directed to enforce distracted driver legislation each and every shift as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce motor vehicle collisions. Huron OPP has zero tolerance for drivers endangering others on the road. Be the example by focusing 100 % of your attention on driving.” – Huron OPP Detachment Commander, Inspector Chris Martin.
