Perth OPP Conduct 205 RIDE Checks – 5 Drunk Drivers Out Of 13,000 Drivers Checked

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) The Perth County OPP wrapped up its 2012 Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) campaign on January 02, 2012. This program was part of a province wide campaign to create visibility and increase awareness pertaining to drinking and driving throughout the holiday season.

The campaign which started on November 24, 2012 was highly visible and successful within Perth County. During the 39 days of the campaign, Perth County OPP officers conducted 205 R.I.D.E. spot checks at various locations throughout the county. Over thirteen thousand drivers were spoken to at these spot checks.

During the campaign Perth County OPP officers laid 5 impaired driving charges and issued 2 Warn Range and Administrative Driver’s License Suspensions.

These R.I.D.E. checks also netted, nine liquor licence charges, one drug charge, two no insurance charges and forty Highway Traffic Act charges.

During the 2011/2012 Festive R.I.D.E. program in Perth County officers arrested 7 motorists for impaired driving while 6 received Warn Range and Administrative Driver’s License Suspensions.

Staff Sergeant Joel Skelding of the Perth County OPP commented on these results expressing his disappointment that even though two fewer drivers were charged with drinking and driving during this year’s Festive RIDE campaign compared to last year, the total number of impaired drivers charged in 2012 stands at 62. This compares to a total of 56 impaired driving charges laid by Perth County OPP officers in 2011.

Motorists are reminded that regular R.I.D.E. programs will continue to be conducted throughout the year in Perth County as part of the OPP’s committed effort to reduce tragic loss of life and injury on Ontario’s roads due to impaired driving.
