On August 27, 2009 at approximately 3:00 pm a 2 seater airplane took off from the Stratford Airport. As a witness watched from the ground, he heard one of the engines begin to sputter and then watched as the plane crashed to the ground north of the airport.
Perth OPP with the assistance of the Huron OPP along with the Stratford Fire, Perth East Fire and Shakespeare Fire Departments all converged on the area of dense woods to look for the plane and pilot. The plane went down approximately 300 meters north of Perth Line 43.
Nearly a half an hour later, the pilot was walked out of the bush with the assistance of EMS. He had managed to negotiate his way out using a compass. He suffered only minor injuries but was transported to the Stratford General Hospital as a precaution.
The OPP is now working in conjunction with the Transportation Safety Board to investigate the cause of the crash. The area is re-opened to traffic but the investigation remains ongoing.
