Perth County Auxilliary OPP Officers Thank The Community

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) On Saturday April 7th, 2012 Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Auxiliary officers set up in front of the Mitchell Value Mart and the Listowel Zehrs store for about two hours and talked to shoppers about the “Special Olympics” program.

They explained that Special Olympics is a program which provides sports programs for youth and adults with intellectual disabilities in our local communities. It is founded upon one simple notion: sport has an incredible capacity to transform lives, change attitudes and make communities stronger. It brings people together and teaches all of us to recognize our similarities rather than focus on our differences. They also explained that the OPP and other law enforcement agencies have partnered with Special Olympics and raise funds for this cause.

As a local 15 member Perth County OPP Auxiliary unit it was decided to see if $500 could be raised towards this cause. ($500 is the yearly amount of money required to support one Special Olympics Athlete). At the end of the day, the amount of money donated by the local residents was $2,164.35 Auxiliary OPP Sergeant Kate Nurse said “This total is far beyond what we could have imagined, and we are absolutely thrilled by the generosity of our local communities”.

The local OPP Auxiliary unit wants to recognize Mitchell Value Mart and the Listowel Zehrs store for their co-operation in allowing them to use the entrances to their stores for this campaign effort during the busy Easter weekend.

Along with the money raised, the Perth County Auxiliary OPP unit wants to wish our athletes the best and they hope that each of them is able to reach their potential and find their dreams with their Special Olympic journey and beyond.

Local OPP officers will continue their fund raising efforts towards this tremendous cause. Their next event is a Torch Run co-ed slow pitch tournament. This will be hosted by the Perth County OPP on Saturday June 16th at the Sebringville ball diamonds. A large number of police teams with the help of local Special Olympians will square off on that day.
