Pedestrians Struck By Pickup Truck – Charge Laid

(TOWNSHIP OF PERTH EAST, ON) – On Tuesday December 01, 2015, shortly before 7 p.m., Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were dispatched to the intersection of Hwy 8 and Perth Road 107 in Shakespeare, where two pedestrians had been struck by a pickup truck.

Investigation revealed that a 48 year old female and a 40 year old male, both residents of the Township of Perth East, were walking east bound on the north sidewalk along Hwy 8. They crossed Perth Road 107 within the crosswalk on a green light and while approximately half way across the intersection were sideswiped by a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck making a left turn from Hwy 8 onto Perth Road 107.

The impact caused the pedestrians to strike the pavement. Both pedestrians were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck, 32-year-old Helena LUYTEN of the Municipality of West Perth, has been charged with “fail to yield to pedestrian”, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.

Motorists are urged to pay special attention to pedestrians, whether they are crossing roads in traffic, walking or jogging alongside roads, or using cross walks. For pedestrians, it is all about seeing and being seen, always be aware of the traffic around you and wear light coloured and reflective clothing.
