Parole Violator Hits Police Cruisers While Fleeing

On January 4, 2016 shortly after 12:30 p.m., members of the ROPE Unit located a Guelph male that was wanted for parole violations on Oxford Street in a vehicle. The man fled in his vehicle striking two police vehicles and sideswiped a third vehicle driven by a Guelph female. Guelph Police pursued the vehicle a short distance before the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons. A short time later the involved vehicle was located unoccupied. One of the officers sustained minor injuries during the collision. Damage estimates for the three vehicles are estimated at $35,000. As a result, a warrant for the arrest of Jeffrey Smith, 28 years of Guelph was issued for the charges of escape lawful custody, dangerous driving, flight from police, two counts of fail to stop at scene of accident and two counts of driving while suspended (HTA).

On January 19, 2016 at 9:55 a.m., the Guelph Police located and arrested Jeffrey Smith. A search subsequent to his arrest discovered a quantity of Heroin, Cocaine and Crystal Meth as well as over $3,000 in cash. He was further charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (CDSA). He will appear for a bail hearing on January 20, 2016.

Two car collision

On January 19, 2016 at 6:30 p.m., the Guelph Police went to Paisley Road near Silvercreek Parkway for a reported collision. It is alleged that a silver Infinity was travelling on Paisley Road and struck a silver Volkswagon that was travelling in the same direction.

The driver of the Volkswagon, a 49-year-old Guelph man was taken to Guelph General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Total damage is estimated at approximately $6,000.

The driver of the Infinity, a 28-year-old Guelph man has been charged with change lanes not in safety under the Highway Traffic Act.

Assault – arrest

On January 19, 2016 at 10:02 a.m., the Guelph Police went to an apartment on Speedvale Avenue East for the report of an assault. It is alleged that a male and female, both residents of this building, became involved in a verbal altercation. It became physical when the man spat in her face and then struck her with a crutch. After a brief struggle, the female was able to get away from the situation and return to her apartment where she called police. Minor injuries are reported.

Police were able to locate the responsible male at 7:45 p.m. and he was arrested.

Richard Spies, 42 years of Guelph has been charged with assault and assault with a weapon. He will appear in court on March 4, 2016.

Theft from cars

On January 19, 2016 the Guelph Police received four reports from Guelph residents about thefts from their cars. The locations were Raymond Street, Christopher Court, Woodlawn Road East and Woolwich Street.

This crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible.
