(Huron County, ON) Some municipalities in Huron County have parking bi-laws. These can range from two hour limits and prohibited parking to laws that are of more concern during the winter months. Since snow tires are now being put on our cruisers, it seems that this is a good time to remind motorists of their obligations concerning snow removal.
It’s a big job to keep the roads and sidewalks clear of snow. Keeping our vehicles out of the way of snow removal however is the law. Under Section 170(12) of the Highway Traffic Act, officers have the authority to remove a vehicle that is interfering with snow removal. In built up areas that have sidewalks, vehicles cannot block the sidewalks either. Although the plough operator on the sidewalk will go around your vehicle to finish the job, consider those people pushing baby carriages or using mobility devices that will no longer be able to get through. All we ask is that people think a little bit and be courteous – or you may be facing a fine and a tow bill.
When shovelling your driveway it is illegal to deposit the snow on the roadway as per Section 181 of the Highway Traffic Act. You could be liable if someone collides as a result of your snow deposit on the road.
Lastly, it is illegal to drive on closed roads as per Section 134(3) of the Highway Traffic Act. The fine is $110.00 and three demerit points. If the OPP closes a road, it is for a reason, whether it be due to weather or for officers to safely investigate a serious collision. This is not one of those optional situations when you feel your skills are so good that you can make it through the storm no matter what. You cannot go around that barricade. RM09117183
