On October 26, 2015, just after midnight, an Owen Sound police officer on patrol observed a pick-up truck being driven in a suspicious manner in the City of Owen Sound. Once the occupants of the vehicle observed that they were being followed by police, the driver of the truck began driving in a dangerous manner at high speed and ignoring stop signs in an apparent attempt to evade police. Prior to the officer attempting to stop the vehicle, it suddenly pulled into a driveway and three occupants fled. A search for the occupants was unsuccessful however the officers were able to obtain evidence from the vehicle. It was determined that vehicle had been stolen from a residence just south of the city limits a short time prior to the officer observing it. The theft had yet to be discovered by the owner.
The investigation was continued by the Owen Sound Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Branch who obtained further evidence identifying the occupants of the vehicle. Later on October 26, 2015, officers located and arrested an 18 year old Owen Sound male. Officers then observed the other two suspects at approximately 7:00 pm resulting in a foot chase and the arrest of a 16 year old male. Both offenders were held in custody overnight for a bail hearing today. One young person remains at large.
The investigation revealed that the persons were responsible for other thefts from vehicles just south of the city limits and the subsequent fraudulent use of a stolen credit card at a local business. The card had been stolen from a purse in one of those vehicles. This morning, members of the Criminal Investigation Branch executed a search warrant on a motel room in Owen Sound where the suspects had been staying. The search resulted in the seizure of further evidence and the recovery of other items stolen from vehicles. The 18 year old suspect has been charged with:
Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
Theft of Motor Vehicle
Possession of Property obtained by Crime (over)
Theft under $5000 (2 counts)
Possession of Property obtained by Crime (under)
Use Stolen Credit Card
Possession of Stolen Credit Card
Fail to comply with probation (2 counts)
The youth arrested and another youth wanted by police are facing similar charges as a result of the incident. The vehicle that was stolen and recovered, a 2010 Chev Silverado pick-up truck did not sustain any damage from the incident. It was towed for forensic examination and later released back to the owner.
