After recovering stolen property, the Owen Sound Police Service is once again reminding owners to not leave valuables in their motor vehicles overnight or at the very least lock their vehicles, even if they are in their driveway.
Owen Sound Police Service Inspector Stephen MacKinnon stated, “Early last evening a very strong and courageous Owen Sound mother brought her 16-year-old daughter to the police station after finding property that did not belong in the home.â€
An investigation by Uniformed Officers eventually determined the property came from ten to fifteen unlocked motor vehicles that the youth had entered the night before. The area of thefts was between 6th Street and 10th Street East above the hill. Money, a wallet with credit cards and other identification, a GPS unit, several pairs of sunglasses and CD’s were among the items stolen and most have been returned to their owners.
The youth, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested for the possession of the stolen property and took responsibility for her improper and offending actions. She was released from police custody to attend one of the YMCA ‘s Youth Justice (Diversion) Programs.
“This young person is fortunate in that she has no criminal record and qualifies for the extrajudicial measures afforded under the Act. We all make mistakes. She now has an opportunity to learn from hers while still being held accountable for her offending behaviour. I really hope for her sake that she makes the best of her opportunity and will come to understand (and perhaps one day thank) her mother’s actions,†said MacKinnon.
