Ottawa Police Enforce Law For Five Days Only In Downtown Core This Year – 81 Criminal Charges Laid, Drugs Taken Off The Street

(Ottawa)— The Ottawa Police Service Central Neighbourhood officers and Demo Beat officers conducted a five day zero tolerance initiative from June 15th to 19th in the downtown core.

The emphasis was to focus on criminal activity and provincial offence in the area of George Street, and York Street between Dalhousie and Cumberland. This area generally has a higher concentration of tourists, merchants and local residents.

As a result,

81 criminal charges were laid, including 31 drug related charges.

116 Provincial Offence Notices (PON) were issued, including offences under the Liquor License Act, Trespass to Property Act, the Safe Streets Act and the Highway Traffic Act.

One Part III summons to court was also given

8 warrants were executed for wanted individuals, and a number of by-law offences were cited.

Items seized during these 5 days included:

16 grams of Crack Cocaine

9 pills of Clonazepam

68 pills of Hydromorphone

15 grams of Marijuana

“These results are outstanding. This initiative had a direct impact on the police’s ability to apprehend the suspect involved in dealing bad drugs last week, which resulted in 5 persons being transported to hospital. The Central NHO and Demo Beats teams believe this will prevent further harm in the community,” said S/Sgt. Sam Fawaz. “This is a continuous initiative in working with our communities to make our streets safer”
