Oppressive Government Toppled – Sirte Has Fallen

Al Jazeera is reporting that the last strong hold of Muammar Gaddafi has fallen. The majority of Gaddafi’s home town of Sirte is now in the hands of the National Transition Council.

Libya’s uprising began on February 15, 2011 with peaceful protests. The protests escalated into an uprising that spread across the entire country, with the forces opposing Gaddafi establishing a government based in Benghazi named the National Transition Council whose stated goal was to overthrow the Gaddafi-led government and hold democratic elections.

The human cost of bringing democracy to Libya is unclear. Estimates have the death toll between 10,000 and 50,000 lives.

The oppressed around the globe are willing to risk their lives in the quest for democracy. Tens of thousands have fallen in the hopes of bringing accountability to their governments. North Huron residents still sit idle while our local government abuses its citizens, violates their own procedures and taxes us into financial ruin.
