OPP Warn Public They Will Enforce Stop Sign Laws For 5 Days

(PERTH COUNTY, ON) – The Perth County Ontario Provincial Police commenced a “Stop and Look Campaign” on Monday November 16, 2015, and will be continuing this campaign until Friday November 20, 2015. They are focusing attention on intersection related offences where drivers fail to stop or yield where required.

Within Perth County, statistics indicate that one quarter of fatal collisions are a direct result of failing to stop or yield at intersections. This percentage is similar for injury and property damage collisions at intersections within the County.

During this five day campaign, officers will focus their available time on all intersections, however during this campaign, 13 specific intersections have been identified as target areas. The chosen intersections have been determined as a result of public complaints or because of high historic collision rates.

Charges for this campaign will include:

Disobey Stop Sign – Fail to Stop – Highway Traffic Act, $110 fine and three demerit points.

Amber Light – Fail to Stop – Highway Traffic Act, $180 fine and three demerit points.

Red Light – Fail to Stop – Highway Traffic Act, $325 fine and three demerit points.

It is hoped that this campaign will raise awareness of traffic controls at intersections and to encourage drivers to consciously “Stop and Look”, especially at stop signs. “Remember, don’t become a statistic”
