OPP Rescue Snowshoer

(TOWNSHIP OF GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – On February 24, 2018 at approximately 6:38 p.m., Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a female requesting assistance after she had become disoriented while snowshoeing at the Grey Sauble Conservation Management Property near Grey Road 17 in the Township of Georgian Bluffs.

The female, although dressed appropriately for outdoor activity, was alone, and her cell phone battery was running low.

Members of the Grey County OPP attended the area and, at approximately 7:30 p.m., located the female and delivered her to safety.

The 47-year old victim from Owen Sound who was examined by Grey County Paramedics Services (EMS) at the scene was found to be all right.

Snowshoeing is a great winter activity but as with any activity, safety should be a priority.

Here are some tips to consider:

– check the current weather conditions before you head out

– wear a warm waterproof jacket and pants, thermal underwear, a second layer of warm

clothing, warm gloves, socks, a hat, waterproof hiking boots, and properly fitting

snowshoes

– carry essentials such as a flashlight, whistle or mirror, snacks, water, a navigational or

communication aid, a first aid kit, pocket knife, winter/ski poles (optional)

– leave a trip plan with a family member or friend, better yet – go snowshoeing with

someone.
