OPP Marine Unit Finds Vessel Safety Equipment Violation

(LAKE HURON, ON) – On July 6, 2013 members of the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine Unit were out patrolling the waters of Lake Huron. At 6:30 pm, the officers stopped to check a 23 foot Doral and found some required safety equipment was not onboard. The boat was missing a buoyant heaving line, fire extinguisher and bailing bucket or manual bilge. 24 year old Peter Alexander of Kincardine was charged under the Small Vessel Regulations for the missing equipment.

The South Bruce OPP Marine Unit wants to remind all boaters that having the required safety equipment on board each time you leave the dock can make the difference between a rescue and a recovery. Check your vessel before you sail – the time to find out you don’t have it is not when you desperately need it out on the water.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
