(LAKE HURON, ON) – On July 19, 2013 at 8:05 pm, the South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marine unit received a distress call from Sarnia Coast Guard radio. A 43 foot sailboat named Scarecrow was approximately 12 miles off shore with a disabled motor.
A storm was passing over the area with high winds creating 2 metre and higher waves, a strong thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch. Despite the small craft warning for Lake Huron, the marine officers headed out to search for the disabled sail boat.
At 8:58 pm, the sailboat was located and a line was attached to the OPP vessel for a tow to the Kincardine harbour. Around 10:00 pm, the sailboat engine started and it entered the harbour under its own power.
While returning to the harbour the OPP marine unit received a 2nd distress call from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC). Blue lights had been spotted way off shore” in the storm. The blue lights are the emergency lighting of the OPP Marine vessel HH Graham that returned safely to the harbour after assisting the disabled sailboat.”
