Online Cottage Rental Scam

(ORILLIA, ON) – Over the past couple of weeks, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has received a number of reports from people who believed they had rented a cottage that was advertised on-line, made a deposit or paid for it in full and then when they arrived, found out that sadly the cottage didn’t exist or was someone’s home that was not actually advertised for rent.

This can be very disturbing for anyone who is planning a family vacation to go to all this work only to find out that they were a victim of a fraud. The disappointment by all those who were expecting to spend a relaxing vacation at a cottage cannot be truly understood unless you know of someone who was victimized in this manner.

The sad reality is that in many cases once the money is paid out it is very hard to get back if at all. Please be careful and don’t let this happen to you.

The OPP is warning the public of this scam and is strongly suggesting that anyone renting a cottage should be very cautious and only deal directly with the owner of a cottage or a reputable firm that specializes in seasonal cottage renting.
