Officer Shoots Vehicle In Kitchener – Numerous Charges Laid

Waterloo Region, ON– On Thursday February 25, 2016 at approximately 2:00 p.m., Waterloo Regional Police officers attempted to stop a stolen motor vehicle driven by a 22 year old Kitchener man on Westwood Drive, in the city of Kitchener.

The vehicle was parked in a parking lot at 109 Westwood Drive and as officers approached the vehicle, the lone male driver allegedly drove towards the officer in an attempt to escape. The vehicle was temporarily impeded by a concrete barrier and a fellow officer discharged his firearm to disable the progress of vehicle.

The driver was able to flee the area however the vehicle became inoperable.

Investigation led officers to Mooregate Crescent and after a brief search; the male was arrested without incident.

“This was a team effort by all involved, and I am very proud of their commitment to a positive outcome”, said Bryan Larkin, Chief of Police. “These types of situations remind us all of the dangers of policing as we strive to strengthen public safety through crime prevention and law enforcement”

He faces numerous charges including Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Drive while Disqualified, Assault with a Weapon, Possession of Prohibited Weapon, Possession of CDSA, Breach of Probation x3. The male also had outstanding warrants for Robbery and Breach of Probation as well. He will appear in Provincial Court today.

No officers, members of the public or the arrested male were injured as a result of this incident.
