Prisoner causes damage and assaults officer during court proceedings
Just after 10:00 Friday morning (05 Feb. 16) court proceedings had commenced at the Ontario Court of Justice in Owen Sound for a 33 year old Bruce Peninsula man who was in custody on criminal charges. The accused became irate at the conclusion of his brief court appearance. As court security intervened to escort the man from the court room back into the secure area of the court, he lashed out breaking a section of wall inside the prisoner’s box. The accused in his violent rage turned on the special constables who were attempting to gain control and restrain the man. The one officer was assaulted by the accused before he was able to be secured within a holding cell in the court. This officer received injuries that required medical attention but fortunately was not life threatening in nature. The accused was not injured during the altercation.
Sergeant Baker stated, “The Special Constables did an excellent job with a very difficult situation, attempting to gain control of a very irate assaultive individual. The officers showed great restrain. Unfortunately one officer received injury which required him to be taken to the hospital.” This officer was treated and released from the hospital early Friday evening. Although his injuries are not life threatening they were serious in nature. It is anticipated that the officer will make a full recovery in a few weeks time.
The accused remains in custody. He now faces additional criminal charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and mischief under $5,000.
