At Tuesday night’s COW meeting, Councillor Brock Vodden introduced a
motion for NH to supply a secretary for the Blyth Community Centre Board
which meets about three times a year. Apparently this
committee lacks the volunteers to fill this position, despite the
supposed legendary Blyth community spirit. Mr. Vodden made a
well reasoned plea, but his motion was not seconded by anyone on
council. This killed the idea, and it was not discussed any
further. Councillor Vodden threw down his pen in disgust, and
displayed visible signs of anger for the remainder of the meeting.
Mr. Vodden was championing the cause of a local group, and he
actually seemed to care! It is refreshing that someone
on council is starting to take their role seriously, and is
representing their constituents. It is unfortunate that no one on
council seconded the motion to allow for discussion.
Ideally this would have been discussed, and the public would have
been allowed to comment. Council would likely have still
turned down the request, but they likely would have decided to make
a public plea for volunteers. If town hall issued a press
release about the need for volunteers, it would have cost them
nothing. The discussion may have caused the conventional media
to cover the issue, and relay they plea to the public.
WFP hopes that council can see the obvious benefits from discussing
things publicly. Council should stop freezing out the public
in the decision making process and encourage participation by
allowing the public to comment before each motion is voted on.
This is done in countless other municipalities, it is time we start
doing the same.
