Mayor Paul Gowing was in the public gallery at last night’s Town
Hall meeting. The public was allowed to offer input and ask
questions, the meeting was a giant leap forward for
transparency. Councillors seemed genuinely interested when a
retired engineer stood up and addressed Council. He was part
of the team that got Wescast to build their new factory here (the
one currently mothballed). The deciding factor for Wescast to
build here, was that the Town of Wingham agreed to amalgamate with
Morris, Turnberry and Wawanosh. (we believe that those are the four
mentioned) In anticipation of this new union, Wingham extended
water and sewer lines to Morris-Turnberry territory, and hooked up
businesses and residents. Since we were going to amalgamate,
we thought we would be getting the property taxes generated from
those properties serviced. The proposed amalgamation fell
through, and we never got a penny in taxes from those
properties. Archie MacGowan stated it was a shame the
amalgamation fell through, as this area could have been an economic
power house.
Morris-Turnberry has many businesses and homes that would not exist,
if it were not for the water, sewer and fire services that Wingham
provides. At least one Councillor stated that it was time to
end this free ride”. This was in reference to the development
