No Money For Fire Code Issues and Leaky Roofs – Town Staff Wages Jump $139,257 to $5.44 Million A Year

Apparently we still have a few leaking roofs, the Wescast Community
Complex and Memorial Hall in Blyth.  The fact that these roofs
are still leaking should be a startling wake-up call for council and
the public.  If a roof leaks, you fix it ASAP.  It is not
optional.  If the leak isn’t taken care of quickly, an
incredible amount of damage can be done to the structure of the
building.  What more proof does the council need before they
realize that town staff are letting the town rot?

The second floor of Wingham Town Hall is not up to fire code, and is
closed for public events.  The Heritage Theatre use to draw
people to town with their shows. You would think a qualified or
effective Community/Economic Development Officer would have been
fighting to get the building up to fire code, so the Heritage
Theatre would at least have the option of starting up again. They
have money for lapel pins, bumper stickers, vanity pens, electric
charging station, $389,000 ladder firetruck, $5.44 million for
wages, $185,000 for Connie Goodall’s department, $80,000+ in
advertising/website, $30,000 for a finger print scanner, etc. etc.
but they don’t have enough money to bring all our buildings up to
fire code.

In order to allow this big jump in town staff compensation, staff
has recommended not bringing the Town Hall up to fire code, to save
$30,000.  Most of council seem to think this is a great
idea.  Also on the chopping block is fixing all the leaking
roofs.  It is deplorable that town staff and council believe
that Fire Code issues and Leaky Roofs are optional.
