Nigerian Scam Alert

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY) – On March 2nd, 2012 at 10:30 am, the South Bruce OPP received a report of an attempted scam from a resident of the Municipality of Kincardine. A letter was received from a Spanish lawyer advising about the death of a relative and a $10.5 million dollar inheritance to be claimed by providing banking information. More commonly known as the Nigerian scam or Advanced Fee scam, a potential victim is selected, and then contacted by mail or by email. The Country of origin and the “lawyer” names will vary, but the scam always involves a huge sum of money left by the death of a relative. The South Bruce OPP recommends never responding to an unsolicited letter or email and always protecting your personal information, especially banking information. “If something seems too good to be true, it likely is. Predictable is preventable”. For more information on fraud, call 1 888 495 8501 or check on line at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122.
