(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding residents to keep their guard up when receiving an unsolicited phone call after a recent report of a con artist attempting to impersonate an employee of Hydro One.
On October 7, 2014 at 10:23 am, a resident from the Municipality of Kincardine called police to report receiving a phone call from a “sub-contractor of Hydro Oneâ€Â. The “sub-contractor†had been hired to disconnect power as the bill had not been paid. This call was correctly identified as a hoax as a call to the legitimate hydro office found no issues with the account.
There is no magic to preventing fraud. Hydro One is a legitimate company, but con artists will often impersonate a legitimate company to gain your trust so they can steal your money. Always verify an unsolicited contact before you ever consider making a payment. You work hard for your money so work hard to protect it.
Anyone interested in more information on fraud can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.
The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
