New Name For An Old Game – Fraud

(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding residents to stay alert for con artists following a report of an attempted fraud from a resident in the Municipality of Kincardine on June 10, 2013. An unsolicited letter arrived to advise of a deceased relative in Malaysia that left a $9.5 million dollar estate.

There is no way to know when a scam will be attempted on you. Modern tech-savvy con artists can produce very convincing letters and they can sound very convincing on the phone because they will have information about you that can be gathered by searching the internet.

The key to stopping Fraud is to ignore. Don’t respond to the requests for personal information or money. When you receive an unsolicited phone call, email, letter or knock on the door, verify that it’s genuine before you provide anything in return. Unsolicited means that you didn’t ask for it.

Fraud is a multi-billion dollar per year business that will only stop when the scammers stop making money. You work hard for your money, so work hard to protect it. Anyone interested in more information on Fraud can call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1 888 495 8501 or check online at http://www.antifraudcentre.ca/.

The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or send a web-tip to crimestop-gb.org, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
