(SOUTHERN BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding residents to be cautious with unsolicited phone calls following reports of successful scams from residents in the Municipality of Kincardine and the Municipality of Brockton.
Following a phone call from the “Canada Revenue Agency” asking for immediate payment or the RCMP would be sent to make an arrest, a number of ITunes cards were purchased to make the required “payment”. In both cases, the amount “paid” was more than $5000.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is a real agency, but they don’t contact you looking for personal information, they don’t demand immediate payment and they don’t threaten you with arrest or prison.
The Canada Revenue Agency has a toll free number of 1 800 959 8281 and their website can be viewed at: www.cra-arc.gc.ca/menu-eng.html for anyone wanting more information.
The South Bruce OPP is requesting anyone with information that can assist police to call 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit a secure web-tip at www.crimestoppersgb.ca, where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
