Almost daily we are hearing stories of Winghamites standing up for themselves and others, helping strangers and standing up to town staff. Senior Management and the Wingham Police should not underestimate the fury of the People that have had their Community taxed to death and then forced to watch it rot and fall apart.
Earlier this week a Winghamite and town staffer got into a extremely heated argument over snow clearing policies that nearly ended with a physical confrontation. According to a post on FaceBook, earlier this week an 11 year old Winghamite was knocked over on a Wingham street due to blocked sidewalks by a driver not smart enough to clear off his/her windows. Thankfully the child was uninjured. Like we have said before, there is no logical reason to wait until a Coroner’s recommendation to clear the sidewalks.
A group of Wingham Residents is also standing up to North Huron council and demanding an explanation of the exorbitant taxes we pay in town. They are also requesting tax rates for municipalities across Ontario to objectively determine the efficacy of council compared to the other 400+ municipalities. This information should be very easy for the CAO to obtain quickly and accurately. It has been several years since the WFP has done a mass comparison of tax rates. To this day we have not found a municipality with a higher tax rate than Wingham. WFP is thrilled at the prospect of this information being compiled and released.
These courageous people standing together to confront council is just one example of how things are fundamentally changing in Wingham. The “death of fear” and the sound of the Ombudsman riding to town has restored hope to a Citizenry that had given up due to the futility of dealing with the disinterested and apathetic senior management of North Huron.
