Missing Swimmer Update

(KINCARDINE, ON) – On August 16th, 2010 at 2:17 P.M, South Bruce OPP received a 911 call reporting that 2 swimmers were just pulled out of the Lake Huron at Station Beach but another swimmer has not returned to shore. The South Bruce OPP, Municipality of Kincardine Fire Department, Bruce County Ambulance and the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary all responded to the call.

The high winds from the on shore breeze and waves cresting at more than 2 meters contributed to a very strong undertow and murky water making search and rescue conditions complex.

The Fire Department sent rescuers out into the water, the South Bruce OPP Marine Unit and the Coast Guard Auxiliary committed their boats to the search and were also hampered by the turbulent surf which limited visibility for rescuers.

The OPP helicopter arrived to join the search, but their efforts were also hampered by visibility issues in the water.

The search for the missing 16 year old female is continuing. The OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit has arrived on scene to assist the South Bruce OPP with the search for the swimmer. Station Beach has been closed to the public while the search team is in place. Please respect the closure and avoid the incident area.
