Matthew Heipel, Nearly Twice The Speed limit

(North Huron, ON) On September 4, 2009 at approximately 7:30 pm a Huron OPP officer was doing radar patrols on London Road north of Blyth. A southbound motorcycle was observed to be travelling at a high rate of speed and it entered the radar at nearly 80 kilometres above the posted speed limit of 90 kph.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was charged. Matthew Heipel (26) of North Huron is now facing charges under the Street Racing Legislation. He has lost his licence for 7 days and his vehicle was towed and impounded for 7 days. He will be answering to his charges on November 5, 2009 at the Goderich Provincial Court. LP09225980

Luckily an animal did not wander onto the roadway and into his path of travel before he was stopped. At that speed, a vehicle would travel over 47 meters per second. In the average time it takes a person to perceive a danger and react (1.5 seconds), the driver would have travelled the distance between two hydro poles. Only then could he begin to think about slowing his motorcycle. Sound like a recipe for disaster?? The OPP thinks so too!
