March Break Safety and Crime Prevention

The Owen Sound Police Service is reminding residents to exercise safety and preventative measures during March Break.

In celebration of March Break, some residents will be going on vacation this week or to spend time with family and friends. We would like to offer some tips that will increase the safety of your home and its contents:

Do not post your destination and the duration of your trip on social media sites such as, Facebook or Twitter

Ensure that your children do not post destination and the duration of your trip on social media like Facebook or Twitter

Ask a trusted family member, neighbour or friend to watch over your house and to collect mail/ newspapers and conduct periodic checks of your property

Do not leave trash or recycling at curbside in advance of your departure, have a neighbour place it out on pick-up day

Spring is always a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon-monoxide units. If you are going away, replace those before you go. It will allow passerby’s to hear the audible alarms; but only if it works!

Motorists are also reminded that students will not be in school next week and will be on our sidewalks and streets during daytime school hours. Students may not always be focusing on traffic safety and as such, motorists are encouraged to slow down and be extra cautious.

If you are planning on consuming alcohol, the Owen Sound Police is encouraging those to do so responsibly. Intoxication significantly increases your chances of an accident or injury, whether driving or not. If you do require transportation, plan ahead. Take a cab, a designated driver, public transportation or stay over. Do not allow yourself access to a vehicle or keys. Despite best intentions at the beginning of the evening, you may not make the best decisions while under the influence of alcohol. Members of the Owen Sound Police Service will be out conducting R.I.D.E. checks at various times and locations during the March Break, as done throughout the year.

The Owen Sound Police Service would like to wish you, your family and friends a safe and happy March-Break.
