Man Tasered After Home Invasion In Guelph

At approximately 9pm on Saturday night, an intoxicated man kicked in the front door of a neighbour’s home on Bennett Street while the residents were at home.

Police arrived and located the man who struggled with police as they attempted to arrest him. A conducted energy weapon (CEW) had to be used to subdue him and take him into custody. The search of the male located a quantity of a white substance believed to be cocaine.

Forty-one year-old Robert Anderson was charged with break and enter, mischief under $5000, uttering threats, resist arrest and drug possession. He was released and is scheduled to appear in court on January 24, 2017

Break-ins

Over the weekend there were 11 separate break-ins reported across the city. Nine of those were to residential homes on Scottsdale Drive, Niska Drive, Sumac Place, Janefield Avenue, Bennett Avenue, Elizabeth Street, Chancellors Way and Paisley Road.

Two of the Break-ins were at commercial businesses on Woolwich Street and Scottsdale Drive.

Unwanted man arrested in building

Late Friday afternoon police responded to a Surrey Street building for an unwanted man who was in the building and had assaulted a resident there.

Police arrived quickly and arrested a 35 year-old man from Guelph. He was charged with numerous counts of assault, breach of undertaking and unlawfully in a dwelling house. He was held in custody to appear in bail court at a later date.

Unwell female located and taken to hospital

Just before midnight on January 15, police were called by staff at a Gordon Street restaurant to check the well-being of a female that appeared in some distress in their washroom. When police arrived and located a 65 year-old Guelph in the washroom, it was learned that this same woman was being sought by police for outstanding charges of fraud over $5000, credit card theft and possession of stolen property. Her well-being was clearly an issue that had to be addressed and for compassionate reasons the female was transported to the hospital to seek medical attention there and served with documents to appear in court at a later date.

Police alerted to impaired driver

Approximately 2am on Saturday, a concerned citizen who was driving on Gordon Street called in to report a black BMW that was swerving all over the road. Police arrived and stopped the vehicle to investigate. As a result of the interaction with the driver was arrested and transported to the station where he failed a breath test.

Lester Ross of Brampton was charged with care and control of a motor vehicle over .08mgs and released to appear in court on February 3, 2017.

Police want to thank drivers who take the safety of our roadways seriously and call in when they suspect that another driver is driving while impaired.

There were also two other traffic stops that resulted in drinking and driving charges over the weekend.

Noise complaints

It seems that people found a reason to celebrate over the weekend and resulted in 38 noise complaints to police dispatch. It may come as a surprise to some that in residential areas, any noise likely to disturb other homes can happen at any time of day. Thefts from motor vehicles

Thefts from vehicles will continue to be reported in the hopes that people will recognize that this crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible. Seven cars were reported entered and had their contents rummaged through over the weekend. There was an assortment of property taken.

The Guelph Police Service were involved with 628 incidents over the weekend.
