The Chatham-Kent police have arrested a man following a shoplifting incident in Chatham yesterday afternoon.
Around 4:30 p.m. police responded to a theft complaint at Shopper’s Drug Mart on St. Clair Street. Upon arrival, officers learned that the man had concealed a Sonicare Toothbrush and ice cream in a shopping bag. The man walked past the cashiers making no attempt to pay for the items. An employee confronted the man at the exit doors and retrieved the stolen items which had already been removed from their packaging. As the man fled on foot, officers were given his physical description. Officers located the man at the corner of McNaughton Avenue and St. Clair Street. Total value of the theft was approximately $200.
The 35-year-old man of no fixed address has been charged with theft under $5000 and possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000. He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
