Male Volunteers Needed to Mentor Perth County Youth

Perth County – The Perth District Health Unit is looking for adult males who would like to make a difference in the lives of male youth in Perth County. Volunteers will participate in the Elements program, which is a unique, school-based program for grade 7 and 8 young men.

Volunteers visit a school once a week, for 6 weeks, for a one-hour workshop during lunchtime. The program is based on a mentorship model. Volunteers do activities with small groups of youth while also sharing their own life experiences and career choices.

“These teens are eager to connect with adults who show an interest in their lives,” says Meagan Melling, Public Health Nurse. “Every year we receive very positive feedback from both the youth and volunteers about their experience participating in this program.”

This fall, the program will be offered at St. Marys DCVI and St. Ambrose schools.

Volunteers receive orientation and training by a Public Health Nurse who is also available at every session to offer guidance and support.

Elements has been offered for 7 years in Perth County. The program is operated by the Perth District Health Unit with financial support from the Zonta Club of Stratford and On Stage Dance Studio.

Men who are interested in volunteering can call Health Line at 519-271-7600 ext 267 or toll-free at 1-877-271-7348 ext 267. For more information, visit www.pdhu.on.ca and click on “Careeers/Volunteers”.
