Lifejacket Saves Another Life

(Innisfil, On) On Saturday July 9, 2016 two brothers in their forties, from Richmond Hill, set out for a day on the water in their kayaks. The men got separated when a rain storm rolled up at 4:30 PM. One man made it back to shore but then realized he had lost sight of his brother and could not locate him.

Police were called by the man, approximately four hours later, and a search was started by Marine officers from South Simcoe Police, York Regional Police and a helicopter from Durham Regional Police.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Trenton was also involved in the search.

Just before midnight, the missing brother was found after swimming to shore in Gilford. Police credit the personal flotation device (PFD) he was wearing the whole time, with saving his life. The man was in good condition and did not need any medical attention.

Police remind anyone who goes out on the water to always wear your PFD, carry all emergency equipment, including a flashlight or flares that can be used to signal where you are, and carry a cell phone with you at all times.
