International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Over one billion people, or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population, live with some form of disability! Around the world, persons with disabilities face physical, social, economic and attitudinal barriers that exclude them from participating fully and effectively as equal members of society.

Avon Maitland District School Board has made a commitment to creating positive, inclusive learning environments for all of our students through our board’s strategic Plan. Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd will give our classrooms, schools, and board an opportunity to recognize and learn more about the diversity that exists among our students.

Now in its twenty-first year, the day aims to promote an understanding of people with disability and support dignity, rights and well-being. It also seeks to increase awareness of the benefits of the integration of people with disability in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
