Influenza Arrives in Perth County

Perth County – Influenza has arrived in Perth County. The number of lab-confirmed cases in Perth County is currently fewer than five, however, many people who are sick do not see a doctor or get tested.

“The flu has been in neighbouring counties for a few weeks, so it’s no surprise to see it here,” says Lorna Askes, Public Health Nurse. Flu season in Canada usually runs from November to April. The flu shot is the best protection against the flu and is still available through family doctors (for all ages) and select pharmacies (for people aged 5 and over).

Even though it’s the time of year for parties and visiting, the Health Unit is urging people who are sick to stay home. “Staying home will help stop the spread of the flu to people who may be more susceptible to complications,” says Askes. “The flu is not the present you want to give to your friends and relatives!” People who are ill are especially urged to avoid visiting long-term care homes or hospitals until they are well again.

Infection Control Measures
To help stay healthy this winter, the Health Unit advises all residents to take these simple precautions:
Get a flu shot
Wash hands thoroughly and often
Cough or sneeze into your sleeve
Keep surfaces and items disinfected
Stay home if you are sick.
