(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – Traditionally, this long weekend is one of the busiest for holiday traffic. Children are out of school and many people take advantage of that to start their summer vacations. The increase in traffic can also lead to the increased possibility of becoming involved in a collision if you aren’t careful and not completely focused on your driving.
All available South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers will be deployed to participate in the Canada Day weekend traffic safety initiative. Motorists can expect to see an increased police presence and an increased frequency of Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) programs throughout the weekend.
OPP officers will be concentrating throughout the long weekend on aggressive drivers, street racers, those not wearing seatbelts, distracted drivers and those motorists who continue to drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol. The OPP marine Unit will be out on the waterways and officers will be patrolling the trails to ensure everyone abides by the law.
“The Canada Day long weekend is a good opportunity to visit with family and friends, or start your summer holiday. However, too many families mark the death of a loved one during this time. Focus on the road, wear your seatbelt, drive sober and don’t start celebrating until the vehicle is parked at your destinationâ€, South Bruce OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Bill Klym.
The OPP’s 2011 Canada Day weekend traffic safety initiative runs from July 1st, 2011 to July 4th, 2011.
