(GODERICH, ON) – Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a 35-year-old driver from Bruce County with a number of Criminal Code offences after police received a call for assistance on November 10, 2015. At approximately 6:15 a.m. Huron OPP officers received information about a vehicle that was parked in the middle of road at the intersection of Elgin Avenue West and Wellesley Street.
An OPP officer arrived on scene to find the male driver sitting in the driver’s seat of a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The uncooperative driver failed to provide a driver’s licence and initially refused to exit the truck. Eventually the driver exited his vehicle and while speaking with the driver, the officer observed several signs the driver was impaired by a drug. The driver was arrested for Care & Control of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired and Drive While Disqualified. A search incident to arrest was completed which resulted in police seizing a small quantity of methamphetamine and marihuana.
The driver was then given a demand to submit to a Drug Recognition Evaluation (DRE). The driver was transported to the Huron OPP Detachment for this test. Ultimately the driver refused to complete the evaluation tests and during this process the driver physically assaulted an assisting officer. Further investigation also revealed the Dodge Ram pickup truck had been stolen a few days earlier from a car rental agency in Hanover.
As a result, Jason EYLES, 35 years of age from the Municipality of Brockton has been charged with Care or Control While Impaired, Possession of a Schedule I Substance (Methamphetamine), Possession of a Schedule II Substance (Marihuana), Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000, Fail to Submit to a Drug Evaluation, Assault Peace Officer and Drive While Disqualified.
He remains in custody with a video court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich on November 24, 2015.
Note: The investigating officer would like to speak with an elderly couple that was on scene acting as Good Samaritans. They had a fuel can with them and were getting ready to help the driver prior to police arrival.
