Impaired Driver Busted After Failing to Lower High Beams

(SOUTH HURON, ON) – A 39-year-old driver from Woodstock is facing four charges after he was stopped by police on August 16, 2015. At 12:03 a.m. on August 16, 2015 Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of a driver that was operating a Ford Fusion in an erratic manner. A few minutes later a Huron OPP officer observed the suspect vehicle approaching his cruiser from the rear. The driver had his high beams on as he approached and he continued to leave them as he got in behind the cruiser. The officer pulled to the side and allowed the Fusion to pass. Once the Fusion driver passed the police vehicle he was stopped on Thames Road near McTaggart Line.

Upon speaking with the male driver the officer noted the driver had been drinking alcohol and was displaying signs that his ability to drive was impaired by alcohol. He was arrested for Impaired Driving and subsequently transported to the Exeter OPP Detachment for breath tests. At the detachment the driver refused to provide suitable samples of his breath to the Intoxilizer Technician.

As a result, 39-year-old Robert RUYS from Woodstock has been charged with Impaired Driving, Refuse to Provide Breath Sample, Fail to Surrender Driver’s Licence and Fail to Use Lower Beam While Following. He has been released from custody with a court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice – Goderich on September 21, 2015. He also received an automatic 90 day driver’s licence suspension and his motor vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
