Hunters Reminded Not To Trespass This Hunting Season

(HURON COUNTY, ON) – The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment is reminding the public that the shotgun season for deer hunting will commence on Monday, November 7, 2016. With the start of the shotgun season Huron OPP quite often sees an increase in the number of trespassing complaints related to hunters illegally hunting on private property.

Huron OPP would like to remind hunters that their hunting license, in no way, gives them the right to enter or cross private property without the owner’s permission. To avoid problems and potential charges, hunters are reminded to always ask for permission before entering a property and always obey posted “No Trespassing” signs and symbols.

Failure to do so could lead to charges under the Trespass to Property Act and should one damage property they could face charges of Mischief under the Criminal Code.

Property owners should avoid confrontations with trespassers. Obtain as much information as possible, such as names, licence plate numbers and vehicle(s) descriptions and immediately call police by calling our non-emergency toll free number at 1-888-310-1122.

Property owners should be mindful that a property of any size, which an owner does not wish anyone to step upon or traverse across, should be properly signed. In order for the provisions contained within the Trespass to Property Act to be enforceable, property owners at a minimum must post a sign that has a red dot on a white background. Signs that clearly state “No Trespassing” are readily available at most hardware type stores. They are inexpensive and carry a very clear and concise message.

Also remember, simply posting a single sign on a very large piece of property may not be enough and signage should be placed at regular intervals along the property line. The signs must also be checked on a regular basis to ensure that they are still posted, clearly visible and in good repair.

Hunters must always follow the hunting safety rules and laws applicable to the Trespass to Property Act to enjoy a safe, legal and enjoyable deer hunt.
