Homeowner Wakes To Find Wet Footprints In Home And Laptops Missing – Police Track And Arrest

Owen Sound Police have arrested a man in relation to an early morning residential break-in and an unrelated theft of an ATV.

At approximately 3:45 a.m., the residents of an east side home were awoken by their young dog who was whining. The homeowner then discovered that an outside motion light was on and that there were wet footprints in the house. The homeowner then realized that two laptop computers were missing from the house and contacted police. Police attended and began following tracks left in the snow.

The officers followed the tracks north through the city to the area of the Bayshore, then east over the escarpment where a foot pursuit began. The man was apprehended in the 1900 block of 6th Avenue East where he was found with a prohibited knife and a key for an ATV that had been stolen the day before from a residence on 3rd Avenue East. The ATV had been recovered hours after the theft behind St. Mary’s School undamaged however the keys were not recovered.
During the police investigation, police determined that the man had prowled around other residences in the city however committed no other entries.

Christopher Heintzman, 25 years of No Fixed Address was held in custody and appeared for a bail hearing today on 9 Criminal Code charges including:
Theft of a Motor Vehicle
Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5000
Break, Enter and Theft
Trespassing at Night (3 charges)
Possession of a Prohibited Weapon
Fail to Comply with Probation (2 charges)

Heintzman was remanded into custody and will return to court on January 6th.
Police believe a second suspect was involved and are continuing their investigation. The laptop computers from the residence that was broken into have not yet been recovered.
