On September L0th, 2015 at approximately 3:30pm members of the Hanover police Service responded to the scene of a collision at the intersection of L2th Street and 8th Avenue in Hanover that involved a bicycle and a motor vehicle. The motor vehicle had left the scene prior to police arrival.
The investigation determined that the cyclist was southbound on 8th Avenue and failed to stop for a stop sign striking the side of a motor vehicle that was eastbound on 12th Street. The cyclist, a 23 year old Hanover man was thrown from the bicycle and sustained a head injury and a fractured neck. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet. He was transported by Grey County paramedics to the Hanover & District Hospital and later airlifted to Victoria Hospital in London.
With the assistance of social media and members of the public the Hanover Police Service identified the male driver of the motor vehicle who had left the scene. The driver contacted the Hanover Police after being encouraged to do so by a member of the public. The investigation continues and charges are pending.
The Hanover Police Service wants to remind operators of bicycles that they are legally obligated to follow the rules of the road and wearing a bicycle helmet will reduce the risk of serious injury or death. Anyone under the age of 18 is legally required to wear a bicycle helmet while travelling on any public roadway.
