VILLAGE OF ROCKWOOD, ON) – On Sunday, January 13, 2013 at approximately 9:38 am Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers received a call from a concerned citizen advising that there was a mudslide coming across Harris Street in the Village of Rockwood and that the road was filled with mud and water.
Officers attended Harris Street and observed an open lot where thousands of litres of water and mud were pouring out of and across the roadway.
Investigation revealed that the banks on a pool uphill from the smaller pool had apparently broken away and was draining into the downhill pool which could not accommodate the extra water and those banks gave way – causing flooding.
Several homes on Harris Street received exterior damage including backyards, driveways and gardens and at least one home suffered flooding in the basement.
The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) was notified and attended.
Harris Street was closed from approximately 9:50 am to 3:45 pm while the County of Wellington Road Department cleaned up the roadway and the MOE conducted its investigation.
