On August 25th, 2016 the Halton Regional Police Service will see the successful graduation of six students from the Youth In Policing Initiative (Y.I.P.I.) program. This program was established and is funded by the Ministry of Child and Youth Services to promote youth participation and exposure to the work environment through several diverse assignments. The Y.I.P.I. program offers the students a unique opportunity to develop relationships within their community as well as obtain an inside look at the day to day police operations, Community Safety, and Well Being initiatives provided throughout the service. The program runs for eight weeks during the summer months and has seen several of the past students move onto successful future employment, post-secondary education, and continued involvement in community initiatives. One of these previous graduates from 2013, Connor Cantwell, returned this year as a full time summer employee with the Halton Police working as the Y.I.P.I coordinator assisting in organizing and running the program.
One of the six graduating students, Alicia Kirkwood hopes to continue her involvement with the community and to one day work for the Halton Regional Police as a cadet or constable.
“The program taught me the importance of community and youth working together and I gained confidence which I will take with me in my future endeavours,” Kirkwood said.
Persons interested in the summer 2017 Y.I.P.I program are encouraged to visit our website www.haltonpolice.ca for more information. Applications will be opening spring 2017.
