(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Halloween 2012 has arrived and thousands of kids throughout the county will be hitting the streets tonight. The Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment wants everyone to have a fun but more importantly a safe “Trick or Treating†experience. Huron County OPP will be highly visible tonight and will have an enhanced street presence in an effort to maximize safety.
In addition, the following safety tips are offered to parents and children.
Adults should accompany young children at all times. Older children should stay in groups, plan your route with your guardians and stick to it. Agree on a time to be home and stick to it. Carry a cell phone and use it if you are going to be late.
BE SEEN! Use reflective strips or tape on costumes to improve visibility. Carrying a flashlight or a glow stick is also a great idea.
Walk on the sidewalk wherever you can; if there is no sidewalk keep as far from the road as you can facing approaching traffic.
Walk; Do not run from door to door. It is not safe to cut across lawns.
When crossing the street, only cross at the corner or at a crosswalk. Look & listen for traffic and only cross when it is safe to do so. Don’t assume cars will stop for you.
Only go to homes that have the lights on and unaccompanied children should never go into a home. Don’t talk to strangers and don’t get into stranger’s vehicles.
Drivers need to drive with extra care, expect the unexpected. Slow down! A child hit by a car at a speed of 50 km/h has a much greater chance of being killed versus a car going 30 km/h.
Parents please take a few moments and review these safety tips with your children. Kids, please follow the rules, be safe at all times and don’t forget to share your candy with mom and dad.
