Halloween Canceled – Blyth And Wingham Closed For The Winter – Surprise! You Got What You Voted For

As many of you already know, after 13 years the legendary Blyth Witches Walk was canceled due to last minute fire restrictions imposed by North Huron.

North Huron council and staff are beaming with pride as another Community event/group disappears due to their apathy and desire for an even lighter workload. Let’s be honest, these types of events never return once they are shut down and the volunteers move on.

It seems the $200,000 we piss away on “economic/community development” isn’t enough for Connie Goodall to give a shit about our Community. The one “great truth” I have discovered over the last 5-6 years of council meetings is that they will follow the path of least work. This repugnant ethic manifests regularly. Don’t want to work weekends during the summer, close the pool on weekends and make the locals drive to Goderich. Tired of cutting the grass at the trailer park, try and sell it off. Hate dealing with snow at the airport, try and sell the airport. Don’t want to clear the sidewalks in the winter, don’t. Don’t want to fix pot holes, let the road rot and contract it out. Don’t want to cut the grass at the former Care Partners in Belgrave, demolish the building. Don’t want to fix a bridge, let it rot and close it. Don’t want to clean your own office, contract it out. Don’t want to cut the shoes down from the cable lines, let them dangle for years for a “ghetto” look. Don’t want to paint the rusty fire hydrants, wait until a local cult needs a zoning variance and they will paint a few on Josephine Street, those living on side streets can continue to the look at the depressing decay on a daily basis. Don’t want to empty trash cans, take them down for most of the year. Don’t want people walking in Cruikshank Park in the winter to enjoy the lights and displays, don’t clear the pathways. Got a hate on for the disabled, refuse to put in a fire suppression system so the Famous Players can’t preform at Town Hall any more. If you want to be a super prick, make them pay for the fire suppression system themselves, despite that CLEARLY being the Landlord/Taxpayer’s responsibility.

So, what would be different if the WFP “goons” got in last election? For starters, each one would have donated back the $12,000 they would have gotten as pay the first year to various Community groups. The Blyth Witches Walk would have been funded, provided with town staff, expanded to Wingham and broadcast to the 100,000+ homes in the FreePress network. There would have been at least a $1,000 prize pool for a home decoration contest that would have drawn even more people to the area.

On the bright side, there have been a few positive changes in the last year. Reid road potholes were finally patched, the Public can drop off recyclables at the landfill again, obstructed stop signs were made visible again, missing one way signage installed and the crosswalk was finally fixed. NOTE: These things were only addressed after WFP Bloggers took up the causes. It is amazing that kelly church is still employed and has never been held to account for his “I don’t have to do a thing” attitude and allowing his staff to use taxpayer equipment for personal use/gain, which seems rampant.

So, you get what you vote for. Halloween is basically canceled for Blyth Witches Walk lovers, and since kelly church is still refusing to clear our sidewalks, Blyth and Wingham are effectively closed for the winter. This will be the focus of our new efforts to shame council and staff into clearing our sidewalks and trails in the winter, watch for the banners on top of your favorite Free Press site.
