Guelph Police Weekend Report

On Sunday 05 February, 2017 members of the Guelph Police Service conducted “Super Bowl Sunday” RIDE spot checks in the city.

At approximately 4:31pm a 2017 Toyota Tundra pickup truck was observed travelling southbound on Scottsdale Drive where the check-point was set up. As the motor vehicle approached the readily identifiable RIDE program, it was observed to slow and make a sudden left turn in an apparent attempt to avoid the RIDE spot check.

The motor vehicle was stopped by an officer dedicated to detecting drivers attempting to avoid the spot check.

The driver was found to be operating the motor vehicle not in compliance with a court order that it be equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device.

A 20 year old Whitby male was arrested and charged with drive while disqualified. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Court in March 2017.

His motor vehicle was seized for a period of 7 days.

– At approximately 6:45pm a 2015 Chevrolet Cruz was observed travelling westbound on College Avenue where the check-point was set up. As the motor vehicle approached the readily identifiable RIDE program it was observed to make a sudden stop before turning left onto a side street in an apparent attempt to avoid the RIDE spot check.

The motor vehicle was stopped by an officer dedicated to detecting drivers attempting to avoid the spot check.

The officer approached the car and observed the number of occupants to exceed the number of available seatbelts. In addition to the occupants in the passenger compartment, a male was found to be concealed in the trunk.

A 19 year old male resident of Guelph is charged with drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – person in trunk. He is scheduled to appear in Guelph Provincial Offences Court in April 2017.

His motor vehicle was seized for a period of 7 days and his driver’s license was suspended at the roadside for the same 7 day period.

There were 575 vehicles stopped and one Roadside Screening Test was performed during this RIDE enforcement.

Search warrant executed after arrest

On the afternoon of February 3rd, 2017, police arrested a Guelph couple for an outstanding break and enter warrant. At the time of their arrest, they were in possession of property, identity documents and banking information that did not belong to them.

Based on this information, police sought a criminal code search warrant for their Fountain Street residence. That warrant was authorized and on February 4th, 2017, police executed that search warrant.

Almost $20,000.00 worth of purchases were believed to have been made illegally. Police recovered a prohibited weapon, illegal drugs and close to $5,000.00 in property.

The 40 year-old female and 42 year-old male are charged with possession of identity documents, property obtained by crime, prohibited weapon, unauthorized use of a credit card and drug possession. They are scheduled to appear in bail court.

By-law Officers alert police to suspicious male

At approximately 12:40 am on February 5th, City of Guelph By-law Enforcement staff advised police of a male that appeared to be tampering with licence plates in the area of Norfolk and Cork Streets. The male in question got into a green Ford Explorer and when police located the vehicle a short distance away, the vehicle fled when police activated their emergency lights.

When the vehicle refused to stop and accelerated away, police discontinued pursuit of the vehicle and in short order, the vehicle was observed to lose control as it sped through an intersection to turn onto a side street. As it mounted the curb a curb and came to a stop, the male driver and a female passenger ran off. The male driver was immediately captured and the female passenger is still at large.

Christopher Boodoo of Brampton is charged with flight from police, dangerous driving, drive while suspended, drive without proper rear lights and use plates unauthorized for vehicle. He was released and scheduled to appear in court on March 14, 2017.

Police witness assault

At 2:24 am on February 4th, Guelph Police officers patrolling the downtown core observed a male strike another male outside a bar near Wyndham and Macdonell Streets. Police moved in to intervene and arrested a 23 year-old Guelph man.

Tamim Abrar was charged with assault and was released to appear before the court on March 6, 2017.

Male refuses to leave

At approximately 7:15am on February 5th, a 22 year-old Guelph man entered a Norwich Street establishment and asked staff there if he could use the washroom. Based on a previous interaction with this particular male, staff declined his request and asked the male to leave. The male appeared to be under the influence of some sort of drug and produced a knife and accosted staff when he was asked to leave.

The male eventually left without further incident and was located a short distance away by police. He was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon, weapons dangerous to the public peace and two counts of breach of probation. He is scheduled to appear in bail court.

Vehicle collisions

Over the weekend police investigated 18 vehicle collisions in the city. The driver of a vehicle that struck a hydro pole on Niska Road on Sunday morning was taken to the hospital by ambulance to receive medical treatment for non-life threatening injuries. There were minor injuries reported in two other collisions as well.

The Guelph Police Service was involved in 628 calls for service. To date, the Service has already responded to over 6200 calls for service.
