Guelph Police Daily News Release – 31Aug2016

Barricaded Male Safely Taken Into Custody.

On Tuesday August 30thth, 2016, at approximately 4:30pm, the Guelph Police responded to an address on Emma Street in Guelph with regard to an emotionally disturbed male. Members of the Uniform Branch, Tactics and Rescue and Critical Incident Negotiation team attended and made contact with the male.

The male was safely apprehended at 11:20pm, and taken to hospital.

Theft from cars

On August 30th, 2016, the Guelph Police received 5 reports from Guelph residents about thefts from their cars. The locations were Silvercreek Pkwy, Crossingham Street, Swift Crescent and Rodney Blvd.

This crime is easily avoided by locking your cars, keeping valuables out of sight or removed from your vehicle and parked in a well-lit and visible area where possible. Renting in Guelph? – beware of rental scams

While the vast majority of rental listings on online sites are legitimate, you should be aware that certain individuals post rental listings on sites such as Kijiji for the sole purpose of scamming potential renters.

When using the Internet, you should always exercise caution and common sense. When using these websites, if an ad seems suspicious or a transaction seems unbelievably good, you should beware.

Police incidents in the last 24 hours

The Guelph Police were involved in 192 incidents in the past 24 hours. Incidents involve everything from traffic stops and accidental 911 calls to domestics and break and enters.

The 18th Annual Guelph Police Bicycle Ticket Program concludes with FREE BIKE DRAW

This year Guelph Police Officers and Youth in Policing Initiative students gave out 819 tickets for a Dairy Queen “Mini-Blizzard® to youth found wearing their bicycle helmet. The program is geared towards children aged 4-13 years old and designed to promote awareness to Guelph youth of the benefits of wearing bicycle helmets while riding their bike through positive reinforcement.

To date, the Guelph Police Service has issued over 18, 504 tickets to the youth in Guelph and given away 36 free bikes courtesy of Vettor Small Engine & Bicycle. Each year, a male and female winner is chosen.

The Youth in Policing Program “YIPI” was established in 2006 and is funded in part by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. The goal of the Guelph Police Service Youth in Police Initiative, as directed by the Ministry, is to provide an educational summer working experience for students of Guelph.

Police Services are a vital community partner and youth are crucial to our community’s success. Over the course of eight weeks, the selected students will work with Fleet and Facilities, and participate in educational and community activities relating to policing and community leadership.
