Snow fall – multiple collisions reported
Ten vehicle collisions were reported between 8:00 p.m. on November 23 and 1:00 a.m. on November 24, 2016. That was also the time frame of our first snow on road conditions of the year.
Remember:
Many winter collisions occur because drivers are going too fast for road conditions. Slow down and allow extra space between you and other vehicles.
Focus on your driving and put away cell phones and other distractions. Look for reflections on the road – what looks like water may actually be ice.
Steer gently on curves and in slippery conditions. Hard braking, quick acceleration and abrupt gear changes can cause you to skid. Avoid using cruise control on wet, snowy or icy pavement – it reduces your reaction time and vehicle control. If you do skid, release your brakes and steer in the direction you want to go. Be careful not to over steer.
Slow down, stay alert and in control
Festive R.I.D.E.
On November 23, 2016 the Guelph Police Service in partnership with the Wellington County OPP and the Wellington County Chapter of MADD Canada launched the 2016 Festive RIDE season. Members of the three organizations met for a ribbon cutting ceremony to launch MADD’s Red Ribbon campaign and then set up a RIDE spot check on Gordon Street South. Over a four hour period officers stopped in excess of 1,200 vehicles without the need to conduct a roadside test.
The RIDE program has proven to be an effective deterrent to educate the public about the dangers of driving while impaired. Officers routinely check drivers for impairment by alcohol and drugs. Drivers who are found under the influence may be subject to one or more of the following consequences;
Immediate 90 day drivers licence suspension
7 day vehicle impoundment
Highway Traffic Act fines
Increased insurance costs
Additional driver licence sanctions
Guelph Police/O.P.P. and MADD would like to encourage drivers to plan ahead and choose a safe ride home.
Police incidents from the last 24 hours
The Guelph Police were involved in 176 incidents in this time frame. Incidents involve everything from traffic stops and accidental 911 calls to domestics and break and enters.
